Vol.1609「WildCherryBlossom-HOSTEL, TOKYO KOGANEI」でリモートワークプランを満喫してきました！(English translation included)

武蔵小金井駅南口から徒歩およそ5分。連雀通り沿いにキラリと輝きを添えているこの新しいビルは、2019年12月16日にオープンした「WildCherryBlossom-HOSTEL,TOKYO KOGANEI（ワイルド・チェリー・ブロッサム・ホステル、略してWCBホステル）」です。

Situated just five minutes from JR Musashi-Koganei Station, this gleaming new building along Renjaku Dori houses the “WildCherryBlossom-HOSTEL,TOKYO KOGANEI” (WCB Hostel for short) which opened last December.

ローカルだけどインターナショナルな交流の場／A local but international venue

営業開始から半年経ち、地域に開かれたホステルとして様々な交流イベントやオンライン体験会を催してきています。

「学生限定長期休み滞在プラン」、「オンライン英語Q&Aセクション」や「オンライン日本語カフェ」はその一例。

そして、個人的に一番気になったのは「リモートワークプラン」です。

Since opening its doors 6 months ago, WCB Hostel has been offering various events aimed at fostering communication between foreign visitors, hostel staff, and the locals in and around Koganei.

Some of these events have included online English Q&A Sessions, online Japanese Language Cafes, and a campaign for college students to stay at discounted prices over their summer holidays.

As a resident of Koganei, and as a freelance writer having no choice but to work from home during this COVID-19 ravaged time, I was especially interested in their “Remote Work Plan.”

日中は個室のお部屋を時間利用できるサービスもあるんですね。ライターという職業柄、とっても魅力的…！

コロナ禍での在宅勤務は環境がマンネリ化しがちでここぞというときに集中できなかったりしますし、かと言ってカフェを転々とするノマドワークはやはり感染症が気になるところ。

その点、WCBホステルのツインルーム時間利用プランは、11時から19時までの時間帯のうち好きなだけ静かな個室に滞在できて、自分だけの時間を手に入れることができそうです。さっそくメールで予約をお願いしました。

So I get to stay at one of WCB Hostel’s premium twin rooms for a reasonable price between 11am and 19pm, AND have access to secure Wi-Fi, AND enjoy a refreshing shower now and then? That sounds like a deal!

いざ、あこがれの「かんづめ執筆体験」へGO！／ WCB Hostel, here I come!

当日は自転車でWCBホステルへ。

立派なサイクルポートが正面玄関の右手に設置されています。駐車場はないものの、すぐ近くにコインパーキングもあります。

I wasted no time in making a reservation via mail, and biked over to WCB Hostel one fine day in July.

Luckily, WCB Hostel has bike parking located at the side of the building, and if you prefer driving there is also a public parking lot just across the street.

1階のエントランスホールに入ると、もうそこにはすてきな「地元だけど国際的」な雰囲気が広がっていました。エレベーターに乗り、2階のフロントへ。

Stepping into the entrance foyer, I could already sense an international vibe. The décor, of course, features mainly cherry blossoms.

Hello hello! フレンドリーなスタッフが出迎えてくれました。AngieさんとYuyaさんです。スタッフお揃いの羽織には「KOGANEI」の文字が。粋ですね。

As I step out of the elevator, I found these two friendly faces greeting me at the 2nd floor reception. Hello Angie, and hello Yuya! They are both rocking their custom-made haori (traditional kimono-style jackets), and I love that it features the word “KOGANEI.”

まずは健康チェックシートを記入し、体温チェックを済ませました。

So here are the rules: guests must first check their temperature upon entering the hostel, and fill out a health check sheet.

Guests are also required to wear masks while hanging out in the common areas, and observe social distancing at all times.

次に電子端末でチェックイン手続きを（写真はチェックアウト時のもの。要領はどちらも同じでした）。

日本語以外にも英語・中国語（標準語／広東語）・韓国語を選択できて、だれでも迷うことなく操作を進められるようになっています。

チェックイン時に最初の3時間分の料金（2200円）をお支払いしました。3時間以上滞在する場合は、1時間ごとに550円のチャージがかかり、チェックアウト時に精算する仕組みになっています。筆者は11時にチェックインして16時にチェックアウトする予定だったので、5時間でトータル3300円。なお、現金・クレジットカードのどちらも利用可です。

みっちり8時間滞在したい場合は、11時〜19時の「デイリーコース」を選べば4950円のセット料金だそうです。滞在中に時間を変更することも可能。最終チェックアウト時刻の19時以降も滞在を希望する場合は、延長料金を支払ってそのまま宿泊することも可能だそうです。

And here’s how the pricing works:

Twin Room Daily Course – Hours: 11:00~19:00. Set price of 4,950 yen.

Twin Room Hourly Plan – Hours: Any time between 11:00~19:00. 2,200 yen for the first 3 hours and 550 yen per every hour thereafter. You can also extend your time to an overnight stay, but you must notify staff before 18:00 if you want to do this. Check-out time will be 10:00 the following morning.

I decided to stay for 5 hours between 11:00 and 16:00, so my total tab came to 3,300 yen. I paid 2,200 yen up front, and settled the rest during check-out.

By the way, WCB Hostel is also offering the use of its spacious lounge on the 2nd floor between 11:00~21:00! Lounge use by the hour costs 1,000 yen for the first 2 hours, and 300 yen per every hour thereafter.

The lounge seems like a great place to hang out and work remotely if you are looking for a clean, quiet, multilingual atmosphere.

受付を済ませると、サービスでスタッフ手作りの布マスクをいただきました。S〜Lサイズのいずれから選べます。

The prices include free Wi-Fi access and lots of amenities! They even gave me a handmade cloth mask adorned with a WCB logo.

ツインルーム利用プランには、そのほかにも豊富なアメニティがついてきます。歯ブラシと歯磨き粉・ヘアーブラシ・ハンドタオル・バスタオル・カミソリ・石鹸類・シャンプー・耳栓…。

えっ、バスタオル？

Freebies includes toothbrush + toothpaste, hair brush, hand towel, razor, soap, shampoo, and ear plugs among others. And yes, you can also rent a nice, clean, fluffy white bath towel when taking a shower.

そう、ツインルーム利用時にはなんとシャワーも使えるんです。こちらでは男女以外にも「オールジェンダー」用のシャワールームを配置しているそうで、ロゴもオリジナルなのだとか。とても新鮮ですね。

WCB Hostel features two all-gender shower rooms per floor. I was told that this wonderful all-gender logo was created by one of WCB staff members — I love the way it incorporates multitude expressions of the self.

蒸し暑いこの季節、シャワーを浴びて気分転換すれば、仕事にとっても大きなプラスになりそうですね。

そのほか開放的な2階のラウンジスペースも利用できるとのこと。2階には共同のキッチン、洗濯室や、自動販売機が完備されています。

Taking showers might be a great way to stave off the intense summer heat and humidity of Tokyo, and might even release a new bout of creativity in your work!

Also, you are free to use the 2nd floor lounge at all times and use their kitchen and laundry space. Vending machines are also available here, as well as a prayer room with enough space for 2~3 people at one time.

ひととおり見学させていただいた後、最上階へ向かいました。予約時に眺めのよい部屋を希望したところ、7階の角部屋を使わせていただくことに…！

期待に胸が高鳴ります。

OK, time to hunker down! I headed for the 7th floor where my room awaited.

お部屋もテーブルも単独の集中作業にぴったりのサイズ感。写真を撮りそびれてしまいましたが、左手奥には個室のトイレもあります。

…and a full view of the twin room. In my excitement I forgot to take a photo, but yes, a private bathroom is available.

So this is to be my remote-working heaven for the next few hours, away from my menial household chores, the restlessness of cafés, far beyond the hustle and bustle of traffic. And wow, what a view!

窓からの見晴らしは絶景。遠方に奥多摩の山々が連なります。

The view out the window was exceptional. Far out in the distance I could see the Okutama mountains delineated against a murky, cloudy sky.

カードキーをテーブルに置くと、どこか遠くに旅してきているような感覚にとらわれました。

地元にいながらも、日常から適度に隔離されたこの環境。これからここに籠もって仕事するぞー！と思うと、やる気がむくむくと湧いてきました。

I placed the card key on the table, and suddenly felt like a traveler far, far away from home. This fresh perspective invigorated me, and I felt a surge of energy as I readied myself for the task ahead.

さっそく締切間近の原稿にとりかかりました。

Writing against a deadline has never been this exciting!

ふとパソコンから目をあげると、武蔵小金井シティクロスの雄大なツインビルが視界に入ってきました。小金井市の景観もずいぶんと変わりましたね。

As I looked up from my laptop, the newly built Musashi-Koganei City Cross loomed high above. It’s a view I’m still not accustomed to, and made me realize how much Koganei has changed in recent years.

気軽にラウンジのみの利用も

そして、5時間が経過。集中力が途切れることなく、快適な環境の中ひたすら原稿と向かい合えました。

強いて言えば寒がりな私にはエアコンが少々効きすぎていましたが、何か羽織るものを一枚持参すれば問題ない程度でした。

Five hours flew by. I was able to get into the flow of things, and managed to get a lot done.

Everything was great, except maybe for the AC being a bit too cool. But nothing an extra shawl or sweater can’t fix!

チェックアウトを行うために、ふたたび2階のフロントへ。精算を済ませたら、今日のところはひとまず終了です。

帰り際にあらためて居心地のよさそうなラウンジを拝見して、次回はラウンジのみの利用もいいなと思いました。

ラウンジ内でひときわ目を引くこの木製の大きなテーブルは、多摩産材のヒノキを使って製作してもらったそうです。ゆったりと仕事ができそうで、魅力的です。

I descended to the 2nd floor for check-out, and then I was finished for the day.

As I mentioned earlier, the lounge is also available for visitors. Next time I think I’ll work here! I was told this huge table is cut out from Hinoki wood grown in the Tama region and features local craftsmanship. It’s just another way visitors can acquaint themselves with the area’s cultural richness.

市内なのにちょっとした旅行気分／ How to travel far without leaving your hometown

自分の住んでいる町でホステルに滞在するという贅沢。

今回の滞在で得たものは、自分だけの時間のみならず、普段の生活圏から抜け出して自分自身が置かれている現状を客観視できる、ほどよい距離感でした。

近隣の住民も旅行者同様にあたたかく迎え入れてもらえて、「また行きたい！」と自然に思えました。

WCBホステルでは、今後も地域に開かれたホステルとして様々なイベントを計画中だとか。『まろん通信』でも引き続きご紹介していきたいと思います。

Staying at the WCB Hostel was pure luxury. If only for 5 hours, I was able to spend time completely solo — and also gain some perspective on how my life is faring. It’s nice to sometimes break routines and stimulate a sense of adventure.

And it’s also nice to know that WCB Hostel is open to foreign travelers and local guests alike. In the coming months and years to come, I hope it becomes a hub for various people to come together to celebrate their differences and find similarities.
